Great videos and I appreciate the letter as well. I have been in the business for about a decade now. I was taught by a car that started bartending at his church when he was 7. Very old school guy, very meticulous about making drinks (and food for that matter). It was awesome because I did not form the bad habits that I see so many people have (touching a glass to the faucet when pouring beer, not properly shaking chilled drinks/shots, not facing their inventory or leaving it sitting all around the bar, et cetera). I especially liked the part where you touched on people saying there is too much ice in their glass. That is a huge pet peeve of mine. This guy almost wanted to fight me when I explained to him that if he wanted a stronger drink he should want it packed full of ice, unless of course he wanted less mixer, resulting in a smaller drink. He told me I was completely wrong and I just made him his weak drink with less ice in it. That has happened to me tons of times. Have a good one and as a guy with a degree in film direction as well as being a bartender, good job!
Hi, I enjoyed your “Open Letter to Bartenders” Blog. I currently live in Charlotte, NC. There are no bars catering to quality cocktails in Charlotte. All the bars are high volume and low quality bars that make basic two ingredient drinks. I flew to NYC to take the BarSmarts Advance Program last November. I’ve been bartending for a few months now in Charlotte. I also started a blog on cocktails. I finally convince myself to move to NYC next month just so I can bartend in a city that appreciates quality cocktails. Like your blog talks about finding a mentor; I also hope to find a great mentor in NYC. Again, great blog.
From one bartender to another, thank you!
A few more I personally hate to hear:
What’s your fav drink?
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Why don’t you like me?
Do you know what’s in a?
Can I get a job? I’m sure I could do this.
Can you tell me what my tab is at right now?
Ppl have no clue! Thank you for helping them see
